High Performance Leadership: How To Get Better At Getting Better

As I study high-performing teams, I notice one thing they all have in common.

They aren't just focused on getting better.
They are obsessed with getting better faster.

They aren't just improving.
They're compounding.

How did they engineer this accelerant?

  1. Problem Selection

  2. Solution Depth

  3. Continuous Integration

  4. Cycle Times

Let's look at each piece:

Problem Selection

The perfect solution to the wrong problem isn't very valuable.

So, instead of rushing to find a solution to the obvious problem, the high-preforming teams spend more time ensuring it's the right one.

The two ways most helpful ways I’ve found to cultivate the right problems:

Compare to What Excellent Looks Like

This will help you examine your system instead of the symptoms your system produces. The symptom is the signal, but the diagnosis is what matters. While the bad customer review might get your attention, your solution is very different if your product is bad vs. if your helpdesk wasn't responsive.

Root Cause Analysis (5 Whys) 

Problems are painful, so we naturally want to move through them quickly when we should go deeper. When you ask Why, you not only help people more deeply understand their role in the break, but you prevent an untold number of similar problems down the road. Because you addressed it at the root cause.

That brings us to...

Solution Depth

Part of this is getting to the root cause, but the rest is "how" you solve the problem.

Do you put out the fire or does your solution also prevent future fires? Levers like training, automation, and proactive monitoring all solve the issues at a much deeper level.

They take the expense of putting out future fires and turn it into an immediate investment in prevention.

Same cost. Except investments compound in better outcomes for your team and more goodwill from your employees.

Continuous Integration

Continuous Integration allows multiple software developers to write code separately without ending up with copies that need to be painfully reconciled.

How you share solutions so that others on the team can build upon that lesson is at the core of your team’s operating system.

Some will rely on codifying their Operating Principles. Some might use a knowledge-sharing tool like Notion. Sales teams have a CRM.

But the cornerstone is cultural. It’s a shared belief and agreement to adhere to this process because the common good outweighs the individual tax.

Cycle Times

If we're solving the right problems, getting to root cause and sharing that learning effectively, what else separates elite teams?

Speed.

If you solve two problems every day and your competitors solve 4, they're a year ahead of you 365 days from now.

Even more because the compounding accelerates.

So, to get better at getting better, you need to get really good at running this cycle fast.

Speed, not for the sake of speed.
Speed for the sake of learning.

In this case:

Quantity generates quality.
